US citizen seeking to travel into Russia in 2024

Hello Irena,
I am a U.S. citizen looking to travel in 2024. The current (and has been since the war with Ukraine began) travel advisory into Russia from our government is at Level 4: Do to travel. They warn us of possible harassment and arrest because of our U.S. citizenship and the on-going conflict with Ukraine. On the news we will also hear and read of U.S. citizen being arrested in Russia for reason X and then see on the same story that it was an unjust arrest, no evidence of a crime was found, etc. So, what are you thoughts/opinion? Should I heed the governments warning and not travel after seeing such stories or is these merely a media campaign/scare tactics to further expand the sanctions by keeping Westerners away from Russia?

California77 Life in Russia is totally normal. Don't believe what they say on TV. If you are not a spy, nor do you deal drugs...you don't have to worry.

Irena Thank you for the reply Irena. Yes, if anyone in the community is a U.S. citizen and has visited Russia since the Ukraine conflict began, please let me know of your experience. How easy it was it to obtain a visa? Were there any issues getting through passport control? Thank you.

I would love to visit Russia from the US as well. I find Russia to be beautiful and love the traditions and culture. How is it possible to visit from the US?

Jd1221 Hello,

You can travel from the USA to Russia. Consulates issue visas normally. However, keep in mind the current restrictions:

Visa to Russia: issued as normal (traditional or electronic).
Ukraine conflict: life is completely normal in Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities), although it is recommended not to travel to the border areas with Ukraine.
Payments in Russia: foreign Visa, MasterCard, JCB or American Express cards do not work, so you must carry cash or buy a card when you arrive in Russia.
Flights to Russia: there are no direct flights, but you can travel through third country air connections.
Accommodation in Russia: Western websites (Booking, Agoda, etc.) do not work in Russia, but you can book on the Russian platform Zenhotels.

I just returned from a week long trip. If you are a first time visitor, you may be questioned about the purpose of your trip at length in some places if they are not larger cities. Overall, the purpose of my trip was fulfilled though. You should not have issues in larger cities.

Abhay_ddn Thanks for you response. Glad to hear you were able to travel without any issues. This makes my planning a bit more reassuring. I visited Russia in 2018 so hopefully that will be in my favor somewhat.
