Customs Declarations

Hi, I'm looking for some advice, in a couple of weeks I will be moving to Moscow and I plan on bringing more than $10,000 worth of cash through, but I can't find any clear outlines of how it works exactly.

Do I need proof of where the money came from, such as pay slips for example? Surely there isn't a tax or a fee either. I also plan on bringing a few items in my checked luggage, how does this work with declaring? I plan on bringing a few computer parts for personal usage, as they are cheaper to purchase in my own country.

simonwolf Its my understanding; up to $10k without declaration, over $10k declare at customs, and if over $100k you need proof of origin. I also assume over $10k declaration is simply for them to be sure you aren't doing anything illegal with the currency coming in or going out. $10k is the exit maximum as well.

Bringing more than $10k and declaring it will surely interest them as to your proper documents to live in Russia versus being a tourist. If you can legally live in Russia they won't take issue with anything you're referring to as long as you're under $100k in my opinion. But if you say "I'm moving to Moscow... " you better have the right documents to reside there.

With that said I'd bring paperwork from your bank on the currency origin just to be safe, It's not that hard to print bank statements that show deposits and balances.
