I am planning to go to Russia to visit friends near Moscow. I will probably stay with them for at least a week. But I will also travel on my own, maybe to St Petersburg and some other places, TBD.

Should I have them do the private visit invitation? Or should I just do the tourist invitation? If I do the tourist invitation, do I have to say I don’t know people in Russia?

It depends what nationality / citizenship you hold. Generally speaking tourist visa is the easiest, especially if you’re American. For the same price as the single/ double entry- one can obtain a 3 year multi-entry tourist visa.

No, you dont need to disclose anything but the cities you are wanting to visit on the invitation letter.

The biggest issue you will face is the registration. You have 7 days to register. In most hotels will do this for you. When staying with the friends, the OWNER of the residence will need to register you. Depending on the local office, they may or may not be able to use Gosuslugi to register. If its not available, both of you will need to go and register at the local office.

@NorseVictory I am American but I don’t live in the US and I have contacted the consulate to see if the 3-year visa is available in my country of residence. I am waiting to hear back. I have found for some visas, the local consulate won’t honor agreements for US citizens if they don’t have the same agreement for native citizens. My friends own their home in Moscow and know how to fill out the form and know that they will need to register me at their place of residence.

Maybe try going through the Russian Embasy or US Embasy there? Im not sure in your scenario. But I would contact them to see what can be done.

But I would still suggest a tourist visa over a private. Less pressure /paperwork on the friends.

Just an update for anyone who may see this and want more info: I talked to the local consulate and explained I had friends in Russia I would visit, but I would be also going for tourism to different cities. They said tourism visa is fine. I applied that way and I’m waiting for the visa to be issued.

I have a similar question… I’m leaning towards a tourist visa for simplicity/faster processing. However I am concerned about the foreigner registration. I intend to stay with family/friends.
Is it a big deal to be registered to a private address when on a tourist visa?

I am no legal expert, but I recommend against that. The second you mention family you will probably be required to get a private visa. Double-check with the Russian consulate. It’s not that hard, either. Get the 3-year. Don’t put family in a position where they try to register you as a “tourist” and then put yourself in the position of being there on the wrong type of visa. Getting into Russia will be no problem. But if you do something wrong, they may not let you out (until you satisfy the problem). Don’t set yourself up to fail.

@Cal Worst case they can stay at a hotel for a night or two before going to their family or friends. The hotel should take care of the registration, or at least that’s how I understand it. I got the tourist visa. My friends understand how to register their guests so it shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t have any family in Russia, and I will be traveling independently for tourism as well.
